jt5366 asked:

my girlfriend wants a new medicine cabinet (the kind with a mirror the goes over the bathroom sink). I foolishly said “thats easy, i can do it for you.” it is not recessed so can i just go to Home Depot and have her pick one out? Is it easy just to screw into the wall? Any thing i should watch out for? Help!!!

It is fairly easy. I locate the studs in the wall, predrill some holes in the cabinet to correspond with stud locations and use screws to attach it to the wall.

I would be the pro that gets the calls, have done it many times.

Go to Wal-Mart, I just did one for the wife. First you can get one cheap, but sill looks great!. There is only two holes in the rear. You get the mounting screws with it.

I would recommend you go and buy the wall (drywall) stud finder that will make it so easy to find the stud (wood beam location) also get the one from Stanley. That way you can tell were the water pipes and AC electric is. Otherwise you might hurt yourself and have water problems ouch!

Now once you have located the holes, you’ll need a leveler and you can get that at Wal-Mart dirt cheap.

First make a template of the holes location on the rear of the medicine cabinet. Just enough to give you idea where the holes need to go. so it would look like this: [ x x ]

    1. use the stud finder and find the stud locations and mark them.
    2. drill the hole for the first screw
    3. use a flat piece of wood long enough to reach both holes
    4. Mark the hole and level the the location use the leveler here also and it should be center.

    5. Screw in the screw in the holes leave about 3/4 of inch from the screw and wall. You’ll have to play it by ear here.

Once that is done you can mount the medicine cabinet to the wall. You should be all set.

Take your time, there is no rush..
