He can be destructive but mostly seems to enjoy the quiet time and makes a nest out of a towel and preens. Does not self mutilate but he does make a mess of the cabinet door chewing.

LOL,my Hahn’s Macaw does the same thing in drawers.
Sometimes I’ll let her do it because it’s so cute to hear her talking to herself and practicing new words.
But I found a dogs ball in the pet store(larger dogs) that has a bunch of holes in it that give her room to walk around, through. She’s taking a liking to it.I also give her boxes to play with. She seems to enjoy these as well. She will go about her talking while in them too,and I don’t care if she chews them up.I have given’ Trixie old worn out towels and clothes to play with too.She really has fun with these. She will fight and wrestle with them to the point of even falling off her perch.I also have stuffed animals I’ve given’ her to snuggle with(and she does).
As long as you don’t have anything harmful in the cabinet that can harm him(chemicals, objects). And your not worried about the door, let him be to enjoy his space and time in there.
