What is the ideal/best depth for a linen cabinet?

Delphine F asked: I am remodeling my house, and will make a custom linen cabinet. I was thinking about a depth of about 18 inches. Is that too much?
and is 42″ a good height (I have 60″ total, but was thinking about putting a plant on top)?
